Whatever Happened To Honesty In Business

There was a time when you could count on businesses to offer honest products and services to their customers. In fact, if a business owner set up a storefront, he or she would be afraid to be dishonest with his or her customers, for fear that a dishonest trade could ruin his or her long-term future.
In those days of yesteryear, one only needed to fear the honesty of the snake-oil salesman, without a permanent storefront – working out of the back of a wagon or the trunk of his car.
Then the mail order businesses came along. Sears Roebuck and Company was started as a mail order company in 1893 and it gave credibility to the business model. While mail order is still very strong, there have been "bad news" companies even in the mail order industry.
Then came the Internet, where I do business. There are literally hundreds of thousands of honest businesses on the Internet, operated by people who would never consider turning a dishonest dime; for fear that one dishonest dime could turn a good business or a personal reputation sour.

Steve Bierma Here After failing forward for 25years in network marketing I found a mentor with a servants heart someone who offered to help with no agenda just to help me get right so I can help someone else find there way to own their life.

Bad Eggs

As you may well imagine, since I do business online, I am a bit hesitant mentioning any dishonest players on the Internet. I don’t want you to get the idea that you cannot trust spending your money online, because most online businesses are honest and do deliver on the promises offered.
But it is also important for us to realize that there really are people who offer products and services online, which simply cannot be trusted to deliver on what is promised.
Statistically, the dishonest people online are few, but there are millions of companies offering products and services online. Even if only one-in-one-thousand online sellers are dishonest, that means that there are tens of thousands of dishonest people cheating other people online.

Food For Thought

For every dishonest person offering products and services online, there are another 999 honest people offering real products and services online.
There are some common sense, buyer-beware tips that you should keep in mind when shopping online.
If it sounds too good to be true… This old analogy holds true as much today as it ever has. When someone is offering a product or service for ten or twenty cents on the dollar – you should take a step back. Even if buying a product or service at wholesale, sellers cannot get that much of a volume discount from a manufacturer.
How long has the business been in operation? This is not a sure thing, as most new business owners can be trusted – they just don’t have a proven track record yet.
Review customer history. If an online merchant is using a pay system such as Paypal, you can see what Paypal has to say about that merchant as far as how many successful transactions they have completed.
Look for bad feedback. Online companies do not offer potential customers the bad reviews they have received from their clients. But there are other websites that enable customers to review an online provider. If buying from someone on Ebay, Ebay lets buyers review all sellers – good or bad. Do keep in mind that not all bad reviews equate to a bad merchant, some people just complain about anything – whether right or wrong. But, if you see dozens or hundreds of bad reviews, those reviews may perhaps give you pause and for good reason.
Is the seller offering more than one method to contact them? Real businesses typically offer real phone numbers, email addresses, and a physical address to anyone seeking that kind of information. People who don’t have anything to hide don’t hide behind their websites.
This last tip gets straight to the point that I am trying to make. No matter the business model or the business owner, crooks need a way to escape with their ill-won loot, without getting caught.
A seller whose name you do not know, and a seller who hides behind the computer without offering a method to be seen, is best situated to take advantage of those who are not careful when buying online.
Other Reasons Why People Hide Online
I believe it is important to share that people do not hide behind their computers for all of the same reasons.
I have spoke with a number of women who hide their name on the Internet, because they fear those in our society who would wish to do them harm.
Others hide because they are concerned about their employer taking an extracurricular business the wrong way and terminating his or her full-time employment.
Some hide simply because they don’t have a phone available to answer calls. Or,
They don’t feel comfortable talking to people on the telephone.
Even if people are not willing to talk to you on the phone, you will generally be able to get a feel for people talking to them over email.
Final Thoughts
After one gets cheated a few times online, it is easy to assume that everyone online is crooked. But the statistics simply do not support this idea.
Don’t get me wrong. There are crooks out there, but there also lots of good and honest people who only wish to do right by their customers.
The best advice I can offer on this point is that one should always be careful to see the company or person behind the product or service offering. Use the tips I have outlined here as a guide to help you to make an educated decision as to who can be trusted with your money and who cannot be trusted.
The Internet is a "buyer be aware" marketplace. You should "be aware" that there are other business owners who are rotten to the core, yet people who are honest to their core operate the vast majority of businesses online.
I have shown in this article that a telephone number on a website is not something that should be considered essential to doing business with others online, but a phone number on a website sure does help.
I don’t want you to get cheated online, but I also don’t want you to fear doing business online. So please, take the time to get to know a seller before parting with your money. Be proactive about finding more about the people you are working with online, so that you can make an educated decision, about where you can safely put your money.
